With Delfina Care, members have access to our Delfina Doulas. These doulas are certified through DONA International and serve as non-clinical support throughout the member’s journey with Delfina.

What is a doula?

According to DONA International, a doula is “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.”

Doulas provide holistic care during pregnancy. They supplement the work of the mom’s clinical care team members, such as doctors, certified nurse midwives, registered nurses, nutritionists, and psychologists, with emotional support and birthing expertise.

Though they sometimes play similar roles, doulas and midwives are different. Midwives are medical professionals, and doulas, though trained, are not clinicians. However, many doulas are also present during birth to help advocate for the client and act as a support.

Why are doulas important?

For many individuals, simply meeting with an OBGYN every few weeks isn’t enough to calm their nerves. When working with a doula, the mom connects with their care team more frequently and receives expert advice from a trusted source. Not every pregnancy worry requires clinical attention: when a mom has questions about creating a birth plan, confusion around breathing techniques or birthing positions, or just a need for some emotional support from an experienced source, they can turn to a doula.

Doulas are clinically shown to improve pregnancy outcomes for people with high-risk pregnancies. One study shows that mothers who were paired with doulas were four times less likely to have a low birth weight baby and were two times less likely to experience other pregnancy complications.

Doulas can also help reduce racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women and report experiencing mistreatment and negligence from their providers at higher rates. Because of this, an experienced advocate in the delivery room helps give mothers agency over their births.

How are Delfina Doulas different?

There are three primary differences between Delfina Doulas and other doulas.

First, our doulas connect with Delfina members virtually and are not present for delivery. They support the mom every step of the way during pregnancy and postpartum, including creating a birth plan and helping the individual learn what questions to ask their provider during pregnancy and postpartum.

Second, our doulas are well-versed in supportive, culturally competent care. Many of our doulas are bilingual, and can communicate with moms in whatever way that the moms are most comfortable with. Even though the Delfina Doulas see moms virtually, we work with doulas from the communities we serve. For example, in Texas, we’re working with doulas from Boldly B.L.U.E., a collaboration between Huston-Tillotson University, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX), and Central Texas maternal health equity nonprofits Black Mamas ATX and the Healing Hands Community Doula Project. Because of this, our doulas can even go a step further and connect Delfina members with community resources when needed and available.

Additionally, in addition to our doulas' culturally competent emotional and educational support, they also guide and help our members navigate the Delfina app, our specialists and classes, and any available supplemental benefits offered by their health plan or employer. Our doulas encourage consistent engagement with the Delfina Care program. They can assist members with instructions on taking their blood pressure or blood glucose, logging their data into the app, and implementing the member’s OBGYN care plan.

Lastly, Delfina doulas are included in the Delfina Care program. This means that unlike most doulas, who sometimes charge fees not covered by insurance, Delfina’s members do not have to pay out-of-pocket for doula care.
